As a first novel, it’s an amazing dive into a huge pool filled with ice. The characters remind you of people you know (especially if you live in San Francisco and have Trans friends) and the deeper themes are quite familiar to everyone, no matter where you came from or who your family is. Life isn’t always fair, and Cassell reminds us that sometimes we just need to stop and look at where we are, compared to other people, to see just how benevolent the Universe can be. One caveat: if you try to eat all the scrumptious delicacies mentioned in the book, you might put on a few unwanted pounds. You have been warned!
